Have your say on the Cyngor Gwynedd Waste and Recycling Strategy

Date: 09/10/2025

Cyngor Gwynedd is eager to hear the public’s views on Gwynedd’s draft Waste and Recycling Strategy which will shape local services for the period up to 2030. The survey will also provide an opportunity to share views about the services as they are now and to hear ideas for the future.

The strategy sets out a vision on how the Council is eager to work together with the county’s residents and other key partners to reduce waste by increasing reuse and the circular economy, improve recycling rates, and upgrading waste services here in Gwynedd.

Councillor Craig ab Iago, Cyngor Gwynedd Cabinet Member for the Environment said:

“Over the past decade, we have seen a significant increase in recycling in Gwynedd - from 55% to 65%- thanks to the efforts of our residents, businesses and communities.

“But we have now reached the point where we must rethink how we treat waste - not as a problem, but as a valuable resource.

“Over half to the contents in green bins and black bin bags are items that can be recycled through services that are already available through the Council’s services. This strategy sets the direction for a greener future where we reuse and fix rather than throw it straight in the bin as rubbish.

"Taken seriously, developing a local circular economy will not only reduce our environmental impact, but offer economic and social benefit.

“The journey starts here - with this strategy noting our commitment as a Council to achieving this ambition, and through this allowing us to reach the Government’s statutory target of recycling 70% of the materials that we collect.

“Of course, improving our services is a continuous process and we are developing detailed plans to the support the Strategy. This could mean adjusting some aspects on the documents as the work continues, and as we consider the valuable input of the people of Gwynedd during the survey.

"We want to hear people's views on the services as they are now, and about the plans for how we can continue to improve.

“Your comments will be very important to us as we agree on the final Waste and Recycling Strategy for Gwynedd for the years to come.”

The aim of the strategy will be to prepare the Council’s services for opportunities and challenges in the future, with the main objectives of:

  • Reducing general waste and increase reuse and repairing.
  • Reaching the Welsh Governments targets for recycling, reuse and composting 70% of our waste.
  • Support the growth of a sustainable local circular which will create green jobs and bring wider benefits to Gwynedd.
  • Deliver a high-quality service where health, safety, welfare, and values of our staff, as well as customer care and satisfaction are integral to our core principles.
  • Become a Carbon Net Zero service by 2030.
  • Invest in our waste infrastructure to accommodate future service development and needs.
