Gwynedd's Waste and Recycling Strategy 2025-2030

Date: 04/06/2025

A report will be considered by Cyngor Gwynedd's Cabinet on 10 June which will ask for permission to carry out a public consultation on the Council's Waste and Recycling Strategy for the period up to 2030.

The draft Strategy sets out a vision for how the Council would work with county residents and other key partners to improve recycling rates, reduce environmental impact, and upgrade local waste services here in Gwynedd.

Councillor Craig ab Iago, Cyngor Gwynedd's Cabinet Member for Environment, said:

"While the climate crisis is a global challenge, the solutions start locally and there is a real opportunity for us to make a difference at the county and national level in the area of waste and recycling.

"Our aim is to continue to cut the residual waste that is created and collected here in Gwynedd, and to support any opportunity for reuse and recycling.

"Since Cyngor Gwynedd introduced recycling and food waste services, we have seen significant improvements in the percentage of recycling in Gwynedd, but it is clear that we must continue to modernise our arrangements in order to see further improvements.

"As a society, we need to change our mindset and see waste as a resource, by repairing and reusing materials before considering recycling and throwing them away, in order to create a sustainable circular economy here in Gwynedd.

"The draft Waste and Recycling Strategy sets out the steps we have planned for the five years to help us improve recycling levels, and also sets the stage for our long-term ambition of being able to process our waste and recycling here in Gwynedd.

"If the Cabinet supports the report, we will be carrying out a public consultation shortly and we will be keen to hear the views of the people of Gwynedd on our vision for the period up to 2030."

The report will be considered at Cyngor Gwynedd's Cabinet on 10 June. If the Cabinet supports the proposal to hold a public consultation period, it is expected that the process will launch in the coming weeks. Further details on how Gwynedd residents and other stakeholders can have their say on what is being proposed will be available soon.

Responses to the consultation will be taken into account in the preparation of the final Strategy before it is submitted back to Cabinet for formal adoption later this year.
