Celebrating International Day of Older People at Neuadd Dwyfor and Gwynedd Libraries
Date: 29/09/2025
Neuadd Dwyfor in Pwllheli will join global celebrations on Wednesday, 1 October 2025 to mark the International Day of Older People, with a special screening of the emotional and powerful film On Swift Horses.
To support the occasion, there will be a special ticket offer: £5 including a free hot drink for everyone over 50. This initiative is part of Neuadd Dwyfor’s commitment to making the arts accessible to all.
Neuadd Dwyfor offers regular screenings on Monday mornings and Wednesday afternoons, as well as dedicated sessions for the Dementia community, creating an inclusive and welcoming cultural experience.
Councillor Medwyn Hughes, Cabinet Member for Economy and Community at Cyngor Gwynedd, said:
“Supporting access to the arts for everyone in our communities is an important part of Neuadd Dwyfor’s events programme.”
“Celebrating the International Day of Older People is an opportunity to extend a warm welcome and promote Neuadd Dwyfor’s services—not only the cinema and theatre programme, but also the wide range of resources available through the library service.”
Gwynedd Libraries will also offer a warm welcome to all—with refreshments, a chance to chat, activities, and an opportunity to explore a new collection of Memory Bags. These include sensory bags for people with visual or hearing impairments, and bags filled with books, pictures, and interesting objects from the past. Check your local library’s opening times in advance and ask about borrowing one of the bags.
In April 2024, Gwynedd received recognition from the World Health Organization for its efforts to become an age-friendly community.
To mark this year’s International Day of Older People, a new project will be launched to create poetry with older people, reflecting the 2025 theme: “Fostering a sense of belonging. Celebrating the power of our social connections.”
The poetry will document people’s stories about the importance of connection, friendship, community, and belonging.
Councillor Dilwyn Morgan, Cabinet Member for Adults, Health and Wellbeing and Cyngor Gwynedd Age-Friendly Champion, said:
“Hearing the voices of older people about their experiences of ageing is key for us here in Gwynedd. We take pride in all the intergenerational work happening across the county, and the opportunities to bring people of all ages together.”
“We want to create a Gwynedd that’s a great place to grow older, and we encourage everyone to make the most of what’s on offer here on the International Day of Older People.”
