Families across Gwynedd can now apply for funded childcare for all two-year-olds, as the Welsh Government accelerates delivery of the most generous childcare offer anywhere in the UK.
From 8 October, parents and carers of children aged two in Gwynedd will be eligible to apply for up to 12.5 hours of Welsh Government-funded childcare per week. Under the new universal offer, funded hours will be available for use from 2nd November 2026 onwards with providers who are approved by Cyngor Gwynedd.
Gwynedd is the latest local authority to expand Welsh Government-funded childcare to all two-year-olds in their area, marking a significant milestone in the phased rollout being delivered through local authorities across Wales. The expansion will also support childcare providers across Gwynedd, helping to manage rising demand and strengthen the long-term sustainability of the sector.
Deputy First Minister for Wales, Sioned Williams, said:
This investment shows we are accelerating our commitments to the families of Wales. Childcare costs in Wales are the highest in the UK and I am determined to help families all over Wales, while also supporting children's development. We will continue to work closely with local authorities across Wales to roll this out everywhere.”
Councillor Menna Trenholme, Deputy Leader of Cyngor Gwynedd and Cabinet Member for Children and Supporting Families, added:
I am delighted that Gwynedd is extending funded childcare to every two-year-old child from November 2026. This is a significant step forward for families across the county and supports the vision set out in the Council Plan 2023-2028 of creating a county where people can thrive.
“By investing in our youngest residents, we are helping to ensure that children have access to high-quality early years experiences that support their development, well-being and future learning. The offer will also provide support for parents and carers, helping more families overcome barriers to employment or training that can arise from childcare arrangements.
“Giving children the best possible start in life is one of the most important investments we can make in Gwynedd’s future, and this offer demonstrates our commitment to supporting children, families and communities to thrive.”
