The service includes Social Services and Education staff, the police, health workers and Probation Service. We also work closely with other agents.

Children and young adults

A child or young adult that have offended will be referred to us by the Police or Courts.

Our aim is to prevent further offending.

The first step is assessing. We will converse with the young adult or child and conclude how best to help keep out of trouble again. We will also be talking to parents/guardians and other agencies.

Community Panel

The panel members are volunteers within the community.

The panel aims to:

  • decrease risk of re-offending and changing the behaviour of the offender
  • give the young adult a chance to compensate for their crime

The panel helps:

  • decrease the crimes in your area
  • give peace of mind to the people of their community
  • ensure the victim's concerns are heard
  • have a positive impact on the lives of young adults

Thinking about joining a local panel?

You must be over 21 years old.

Previous experience and qualification is not essential. A criminal record will not deter anyone from being a panellist. The GCIGM will provide training and we will support by providing continuous training through-out your time as a volunteer.

You must agree to serve for a minimum of 2 years.

Contact us for more information.

Parents and guardians

We offer parents / guardians help in developing their confidence when dealing with their children / young adults in a positive manner by developing coping skills.

The parenting service offers:

  • 1 to 1 work
  • Group sessions
  • Learning how to avoid arguments and confrontation by dealing with the young adult's difficult behaviour
  • Set boundaries

Victims of crime

You do not have to co-operate with our service when we contact you following an incident. You do not have to answer.

We will ask you about the impact this crime has had on your life. We will provide the opportunity to start a dialogue with the individual responsible for your suffering, if you wish to do so. You can suggest where you believe the individual should volunteer within the community, or receive a letter of explanation / apology or meet with the individual face to face.

Even if you are not willing to participate immediately, you are welcome to contact us at a later date. We work in accordance with the National Code of Practice for Victims of Crime published by the Justice Ministry.
