Toileting - supporting your child

Does trying to get your child to start going to the toilet themselves cause you anxiety?

Going to the toilet is a big milestone for young children. It's important to approach the process with patience and encouragement. Every child develops at their own pace, so try to stay positive and consistent.

Starting school

It is expected that your child can use the toilet before starting school, unless they have a medical condition or additional learning needs.

Before starting school, the child is expected to:

  • Be able to tell an adult when they need to use the toilet
  • Be able to use the toilet with minimal assistance
  • Be able to manage their clothing (pulling pants up/down)
  • Be familiar with wiping and basic hygiene, such as hand washing
