Neuadd Dwyfor applying for the BIFA Cinema of the Year Award

Date: 04/09/2025

Neuadd Dwyfor, Pwllheli is calling on customers and the local community to vote as they attempt to secure a nomination for the British Independent Film Award's (BIFA) inaugural Cinema of the Year award.

In July, cinemas across the country were invited to participate by explaining why their cinema is so special. By taking part in the competition, Neuadd Dwyfor wants to highlight and celebrate the hall as a vibrant arts centre, and to highlight the key role it plays within the community of Pwllheli and across the Dwyfor area.

Neuadd Dwyfor works very closely with local businesses and charities to develop a programme of events that support the need locally and ensure that the arts are accessible and relevant to everyone in the local community.

Five Welsh cinemas have passed their names on to BIFA, and only two in Gwynedd namely Neuadd Dwyfor and the Magic Lantern in Tywyn. The voting period for cinema audiences is now open and closes on 22 September. A special panel will select the nominees, taking into account audience votes and presentations by the cinemas.

Five nominees will be announced on 3 November, along with the remaining BIFA Awards 2025 nominees. Following this, there will be a further opportunity for the cinema audience to vote and decide the winner. The winner will be revealed at the BIFA ceremony on Sunday, 30 November.

Councillor Medwyn Hughes, Cyngor Gwynedd's Cabinet Member for Economy and Community, said:

"Neuadd Dwyfor is a good example of independent cinema, with a particular emphasis on productions that celebrate Welsh culture and heritage. From blockbuster films to classics, the cinema welcomes a dedicated and diverse audience.

"I'm proud of the collaboration that is taking place with local businesses to jointly promote and that we are supporting independent businesses in Pwllheli — strengthening the important link between culture and community.

"I wish Neuadd Dwyfor every success as they apply for the BIFA Cinema of the Year Award, and it would be great to see the residents of Gwynedd supporting them. Your support will enable Neuadd Dwyfor to continue to bring independent films to the rural community in Gwynedd, and to keep cinema culture alive in Pwllheli."

BIFA directors Amy Gustin and Deena Wallace added:

"We are extremely excited to announce our first-ever audience award through this campaign, which promotes the role of cinema in independent film — not just what we watch, but also how and where we experience it. Cinemas are vital spaces for film discovery, access and community, and we're delighted to be able to celebrate them with this new award."

Steve Hicks, Marketing Director at Kia UK Limited, said:

"Film fans love to celebrate their favourite films during awards season. Now cinema lovers can also celebrate the best venues to enjoy these films. While streaming at home is convenient, nothing compares to the 'big screen' experience for those looking to fully immerse themselves in the latest release – especially when these cinemas are so central to their local communities. We are excited to collaborate with the British Independent Film Awards to recognise the cinemas that offer the most memorable and enjoyable experiences for film fans."

About the award:

There’s nothing quite like the community experience of watching a movie on the big screen, and BIFA wants to celebrate exceptional cinemas across the country that are at the heart of their communities — bringing audiences together and highlighting independent films.

Kia has been promoting independent cinema and their communities since 2022. As a proud fan of independent cinema and independent film screenings, just like BIFA, Kia celebrates diverse and powerful stories that make it to the big screen. That's why, this year, Kia is proud to raise their commitment to independent cinemas by partnering with BIFA for the inaugural Cinema of the Year award.
