Bangor is a sub-regional centre for North Wales, renowned for its history and vibrant community. However, the city faces significant economic challenges, including the need to boost future prosperity, address long-standing decline, and enhance its vitality.
In response, Cyngor Gwynedd, alongside a range of stakeholders, has developed a Placemaking Plan as part of its regeneration efforts. This plan provides a cohesive framework for tackling these challenges through a series of innovative and impactful projects.
The Bangor Health and Wellbeing Hub is an ambitious proposal that could bring significant benefits to the local community. A collaboration between Cyngor Gwynedd, the Welsh Government, and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, the project aims to relocate certain healthcare services from Ysbyty Gwynedd to a vacant unit on Bangor High Street. At this stage, the project remains in the planning phase. If approved, it has the potential to enhance access to health and wellbeing services, while also contributing to the regeneration of the city centre.
Coleg Llandilo Menai Adult Education Center
Grŵp Llandrillo Menai (GLLM) has transformed the former "Topshop" building on Bangor High Street into Tŷ Cyfle Bangor, an Educational and Community Hub. Supported by the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning fund and the Transforming Towns regeneration fund, this facility offers a wide range of education and training programs, along with personal support services designed to improve employment prospects, financial stability, and well-being. By revitalizing a previously vacant site, Tŷ Cyfle Bangor has increased foot traffic and economic activity on Bangor High Street, supporting local businesses and contributing to the area's economic prosperity.
The Storiel Transforming Towns project focused on enhancing the museum and art gallery’s outdoor spaces to create a more inviting and attractive area, drawing in more visitors. Partly funded by the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns programme, the project delivered key improvements such as installing outdoor seating around the green areas and adding artistic elements like painted posts, oak disks, marble stones, and new tree planting. An outdoor digital board was installed to promote events, and lighting was added to highlight the building's architectural features. Improved signage and branded wayfinding features were also implemented, both inside and outside. These enhancements have increased Storiel's visibility, attracting both local visitors and tourists.
The Bangor Signage Project, led by Cyngor Gwynedd, aimed to upgrade the city's outdated wayfinding system by installing 19 new fingerposts and replacing 5 existing posts. Supported by the UK Government's Shared Prosperity Fund and the Welsh Government's Transforming Towns Fund, this initiative improves visibility and access to key landmarks such as Bangor Pier, Bangor University, and the Cathedral, making them more accessible to residents and visitors. Enhanced signage boosts local tourism, supports nearby businesses, and stimulates economic growth. Additionally, the project strengthens Bangor's identity and revitalizes its urban environment, making the city more navigable and welcoming.
