Parking zones and restrictions help manage traffic flow and ensure parking availability across the local area. Below is important information on the types of parking zones, permits, and restrictions that apply within our council’s boundaries.
Types of Parking Zones
- Residential Parking Zones (RPZ) Residential zones are designated areas where parking is primarily reserved for residents. These zones are in place to prevent congestion and ensure that local residents can park close to their homes. Residents must apply for a parking permit to park in these areas.
- Pay and Display Zones In pay and display zones, you must purchase a parking ticket from a nearby machine and display it clearly on your vehicle’s dashboard. These zones typically operate in busy areas, such as high streets, town centres, and near transport hubs.
- Limited Stay Parking Some parking bays offer limited stay parking, allowing free parking for a set amount of time (e.g., 30 minutes to 2 hours). These bays are ideal for quick visits to shops or services. Make sure to check the signage for specific time limits.
- Permit Holder Zones Certain areas are reserved for permit holders only, particularly near schools, hospitals, or other high-demand locations. You will need a valid parking permit to park in these zones, and non-permit holders may be fined.
- Disabled Parking Bays Disabled parking bays are available for blue badge holders and are typically located near public buildings and shopping areas. Only vehicles displaying a valid blue badge may park in these bays.
Parking Restrictions
- Yellow Lines
- Single yellow lines: Parking is restricted during certain hours, usually displayed on nearby signage. Outside these hours, parking is permitted.
- Double yellow lines: Parking is prohibited at all times, unless you hold a blue badge, which may allow short-term parking in some circumstances.
- Loading Bays Loading bays are reserved for vehicles actively loading or unloading goods. These areas are not for general parking, and restrictions often apply during business hours.
- Clearways No stopping is allowed on clearways during specified hours. These are usually found on major roads to ensure traffic flow is not obstructed.
- Bus and Cycle Lanes Parking or stopping in bus or cycle lanes is prohibited during operational hours, which are indicated on roadside signs.
- School Keep Clear Zones To ensure child safety, parking is prohibited in school zones during drop-off and pick-up times. These areas are marked by yellow zigzag lines.
Parking Permits
Residents, businesses, and visitors can apply for various types of parking permits depending on the zone and their eligibility:
- Resident Permits: For those living within a residential parking zone.
- Visitor Permits: Temporary permits for guests of residents.
- Business Permits: Available to businesses in restricted parking areas.
You can apply for parking permits online via our council’s portal. Permit holders must ensure that their permits are visible on their vehicles at all times to avoid penalties.
Enforcement
Parking restrictions are enforced by civil enforcement officers. Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) may be issued to vehicles that are parked illegally or in violation of the posted restrictions. If you receive a PCN, you can pay or appeal the fine through the council’s website.
