Llewyrch o'r Llechi, Levelling Up Fund

The Llewyrch o’r Llechi: Economic prosperity from our industrial past project is part of Cyngor Gwynedd’s efforts to realise The Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales World Heritage Site vision, which is to:

Protect, conserve, enhance and communicate the important qualities of the area in order to reinforce cultural distinctiveness and strengthen the Welsh language, and become an important driver for economic regeneration and social inclusion.

The Llewyrch o’r Llechi project is led by Cyngor Gwynedd on behalf of a range of partners, and is a project that has received financial support from the UK Government Levelling Up Fund.  The total project value is £26m with £18.8m coming from the Levelling Up Fund.  A number of interventions are part of the Llewyrch o’r Llechi project in the Dyffryn Peris, Dyffryn Ogwen and Bro Ffestiniog areas, and include:

Dinorwig Hub:

  • Redeveloping the National Slate Museum on the Gilfach Ddu site in order to create exhibition and education spaces, and a main interpretation hub for the World Heritage Site, along with conservation work to the historic building.
  • Improvements to Parc Padarn including upgrading and creating footpaths, repurposing historic buildings, improving visitor infrastructure and conservation work.

Ogwen Hub:

  • Investment in Neuadd Ogwen to upgrade the sound system and fabric of the building to enable events to be held there.
  • Redevelop Yr Hen Bost on the High Street to create business units, a purpose built heritage centre and a community resource.
  • Create a walking and cycling route to connect Bethesda and Penrhyn Quarry, including work to upgrade bridges, footpaths and interpretation.

Ffestiniog Hub

  • Upgrade Aelwyd yr Urdd as a community centre with an interpretation and heritage offer.
  • Repurpose two empty shops on the High Street to create business units, residential space and a creative space for the community.
  • Create a walking and cycling route to connect Blaenau Ffestiniog and Llechwedd Quarry.

The project also includes conservation work to historic slate structures in the three areas, along with investments in the main centres by improving interpretation, signage and street furniture, and public art projects.
