If you're on a low income or claiming certain benefits, you may be eligible for a Council Tax Reduction, which could reduce the amount of Council Tax you pay. This reduction is available for individuals, families, and pensioners who meet specific criteria.
Who Can Apply?
You may qualify for a Council Tax Reduction if you:
- Have a low income or are unemployed
- Are claiming benefits such as Universal Credit, Income Support, Jobseeker’s Allowance, or Employment and Support Allowance
- Are a pensioner on a limited income
- Live alone or with dependents
- Are a carer or someone with a disability
- Have savings or capital below £16,000 (unless you receive Pension Credit Guarantee)
The amount of reduction you are entitled to depends on your income, savings, household circumstances, and the Council Tax band of your property.
How to Apply
Applying for a Council Tax Reduction is simple and can be done online or by post. Follow these steps to submit your application:
- Gather your information: You will need your National Insurance number, proof of income or benefits, details of any savings, and information about anyone else living in your household.
- Complete the application: Use our secure online application form to provide the required information. You can save and return to your application if needed.
- Submit supporting documents: You will need to upload or send copies of your supporting documents, such as payslips, benefit award letters, or bank statements.
- Review and submit: Once your application is complete, review all the details carefully before submitting it for processing.
If you prefer to apply by post, download our application form or request one by contacting our office. Once completed, send it along with your supporting documents.
What Happens Next?
Once we receive your application, we will review your eligibility and calculate the amount of reduction you may receive. This process usually takes up to 4 weeks. If we need more information, we will contact you directly.
You will be informed of our decision by post or email. If your application is successful, your Council Tax bill will be adjusted accordingly, and you’ll receive an updated bill showing your new payment amount.
Changes in Circumstances
If your circumstances change, such as a change in income, benefits, or household composition, you must inform us immediately as this may affect your entitlement to Council Tax Reduction. Failure to report changes could result in overpayments, which you may need to repay.
