Gwynedd Council puts food waste to good use

Date: 21/11/2022

According to the Energy Saving Trust, 8-10% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions come from our food waste. This is contributing to the climate emergency, but there are little changes we can all make in our everyday lives with positive results.

Some food waste is inevitable and it doesn’t mean that you’re being wasteful.

You may think that things like peelings, eggshells and bones are good for nothing, but Cyngor Gwynedd can put them to good use – all you have to do is pop them in your brown bin to put out for weekly collection.

Every year, more than 11,000 tonnes of food waste is turned into electricity and compost at the Council’s Gwyriad plant near Clynnog Fawr.

All Gwynedd households can have free brown food waste bins – a small caddy which will easily fit in a cupboard under the sink or on the kitchen counter and a larger bin to be put out on collection day plus free liner bags.
