Ysgol Abersoch

Date: 20/09/2021

A report that will be considered by Gwynedd Council's Cabinet on 28 September recommends the closure of Ysgol Abersoch on 31 December 2021 and providing a place for pupils to attend Ysgol Sarn Bach from January 2022.

This follows detailed discussions regarding the school's vulnerable situation due to the small number of pupils followed by a statutory consultation and statutory objection period on the proposal.

With a capacity for 32 pupils, in September 2020 eight children were attending the school full time and two nursery pupils. Projections do not indicate that there will be a significant increase in pupil numbers at Ysgol Abersoch over the next few years.

Because of the concerns about the vulnerable situation of the school, the Council carried out a statutory consultation earlier in the year on the proposal to close and to offer places for children at Ysgol Sarn Bach and lately, a statutory notice was published on the proposal and a statutory objection period was held.

Councillor Cemlyn Williams, Gwynedd Council's Cabinet Member for Education, said:

“Making a decision on the future of any school is not an easy decision and we fully appreciate that this has been a difficult period for everyone connected with the school.

"I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the discussions on the future of Ysgol Abersoch including the pupils, staff and governors, as well as those who have contributed to the consultation and statutory objection periods.

“It is always sad when the future of any school is under consideration. However, we have a duty to ensure that we offer the best possible education and experiences along with the best possible learning environment for our children.

“Having fully considered all objections received as part of the statutory objection period, it is recommended to confirm the proposal to close Ysgol Abersoch at the end of 2021.

“As part of this proposal, the pupils would be offered places at the nearby Ysgol Sarn Bach from January 2022.

“There is naturally a desire in the village of Abersoch to see the school continuing, and every effort will be made to ensure that there will be a strong link between the Abersoch community and Ysgol Sarn Bach which many Abersoch pupils already attend from Year 4 onwards.”

The Council’s Cabinet will consider the matter on 28 September.
