Standard Packaging of Tobacco Products – transitional period for sell-through of stock ends 20 May 2017

The Standardised Packaging of Tobacco Products Regulations 2015 came into effect on 20 May 2016 which meant that all tobacco products manufactured for sale in the UK had to comply with the new law.

A one year transitional period was provided in the legislation to allow old stock to be sold in the shops but from 21 May 2017 onwards all tobacco products on sale in the UK must be sold in standard or “plain” packaging.

The aim of these regulations is to remove any attractive features that may be used to promote the tobacco product. The brand name, variant name, number of cigarettes or weight of the hand rolling tobacco etc. is permitted but must be in a standardised format. The packaging must also be a specific shape and in a certain colour.

Should you require any further advice or guidance on the legislation which applies to the selling of tobacco products in Gwynedd, please contact  the Council’s Trading Standards Unit on 01766 771000 or email safmas@gwynedd.llyw.cymru
