Consultation on the future of primary education in Bangor

Date: 13/03/2018

Gwynedd Council's Cabinet has supported the recommendation to start a period of consultation on the proposal to reorganise schools in the Bangor catchment area.

The consultation will sought views on the intention to build a new school for Ysgol y Garnedd. The development would mean increasing the capacity of the school to 420 on the present Garnedd site and nearby Ysgol Friars land. This change would also mean the closure of Ysgol Coedmawr and Glanadda and pupils would be offered places at Ysgol y Garnedd (subject to the choice of parents).

In addition, as part of a proposal to reorganise education provision in the Bangor catchment area, a recommendation has been included to hold a pre-consultation with the Church in Wales with a view to extending and carrying out improvements that would increase the capacity of Ysgol y Faenol to 315 pupils.

Following the Council's Cabinet meeting on 13 March, there will be a period of statutory consultation that will commence during April 2018.

Gwynedd Council has secured a £12.7million investment for modernising primary education provision in the city of Bangor. This includes a contribution of £6.3 million from the Welsh Government to enable the Council to review and improve the education provision. As part of an agreement for the new Goetre Uchaf development in Penrhosgarnedd, there is also a commitment by housing company, Redrow.

Councillor Gareth Thomas, Gwynedd Council Education Cabinet Member said: "As a Council, we are eager to ensure that all Gwynedd children will have access to the best possible educational resources in high-quality facilities.

"The investment of £12.7 million which is financed jointly by Gwynedd Council and the Welsh Government will ensure that children in the area are taught on sites which provide a learning environment that is suitable for the 21St century.

"While accepting that any option which considers the closure of sites is a difficult decision, I feel that the option before us offers an opportunity to improve the educational provision in Bangor and gives us an opportunity to strengthen the Welsh language provision in the city.

"Our aim as a Council is to be able to offer the best possible experiences and opportunities for all our pupils – in communities across the county."
