Gwynedd Council has received 3,000 Easter eggs from the National Trust which were due to be used during an Easter egg hunt held in April, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic this was not possible.

Rather than wasting them, staff at Plas Menai National Watersport Centre, Caernarfon have volunteered to collect and distribute the eggs, and a decision has been made to distribute them between care homes, food banks as well as be part of a weekly food care package sent to eligible individuals.

Steven Morgan, Head of Operations at Plas Menai said: "At a time of the year when the Centre is full of children and young people enjoying adventures, we can only use our resources to help and support the local community during these difficult times."

Councillor Gareth Thomas, Gwynedd Council's Cabinet Member for Economic Development, stated: "Many thanks to the National Trust for their generous donation, and to the staff of Plas Menai for arranging to collect and distribute the Easter Eggs.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who continues to give generously to the local food banks. Even the smallest gifts are greatly appreciated.

“It is good to know that the eggs will not go to waste, and that vulnerable individuals in Gwynedd will be glad to receive them.

"It's been a difficult time for all of us, and I'm sure this will lift spirits."

Councillor Dafydd Meurig, Gwynedd Council's Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Adults, Health and Well-being, added: "I would like to reiterate our thanks to the Trust and Plas Menai for the donation and their support in distributing the eggs.

“It continues to be a difficult time for Gwynedd care home residents, and I'm sure receiving these gifts will put a smile on many faces.”

Business owners who think they can contribute to the food banks can contact the Council by emailing CymorthCymunedol@gwynedd.llyw.cymru or via telephone on 07989 351502 or 01766 771000 and asking for Marian Wyn Jones.

Any member of the public can support their local food bank, and there are baskets to collect food at all the major supermarkets locally. Details of all Gwynedd food banks are available on the Council's website: www.gwynedd.llyw.cymru/communityhelp
