Be a Councillor – Awareness raising sessions

Awareness raising sessions are being held by Gwynedd Council in Dwyfor, Meirionydd and Arfon to raise awareness of the role of a councillor and to prepare prospective candidates for being county councillors should they be successful in the authority’s elections in May 2017.

This stems from a scheme run by Gwynedd Council which aims to encourage more women, young people, ethnic minorities and members of other under-represented groups to consider standing to become councillors. As a part of this scheme, the Council sees the need to improve the way people are prepared to be county councillors, whilst offering candidates an opportunity to have a chat so that they can have a better understanding of what would await them if they will be successful, before they present nominations.

So, if you’re considering applying to be a Councillor, or if you’d like to broaden your knowledge on what is a Councillor’s work and role, the Be a Councillor sessions will be useful for you.

Councillor Tom Ellis, Chairman of Gwynedd Council’s Democratic Services Committee said:

“Over the past few years, it has been encouraging to see more young people and women getting involved in the Council’s work. However it is a fact that the Council Chamber is far from being representative of the county’s communities.

“This project aims to explain what councillors do, and raises awareness of the steps that have been taken to remove some of the barriers that might have prevented people from considering becoming a councillor in the past.”

More information on these matters and Councillors’ work will be available in the Be a Councillor sessions. Three information sessions will be held, details here:

-       Tuesday, 17 January 2017 at 6pm - Frondeg Meeting Room, Pwllheli, LL53 2RE.

-       Wednesday, 18 January 2017 at 6pm - Council Offices, Penarlag, Dolgellau, LL40 2YB.

-       Thursday, 19 January 2017 at 6pm - Dafydd Orwig Chamber, Council Offices Caernarfon, LL55 1SH.
