Housing benefits
What is Housing Benefit?
Housing Benefit is a state benefit designed to help you pay your rent if you are on a low income.
Make a benefit claim
Instructions on how to make a benefit claim.
Overpayments
Overpayments can occur for many reasons. Find out more.
Backdating your claim
Backdating is sometimes possible but it can only be done in limited circumstances so it is always best to make your claim as soon as possible.
If you disagree with our decision on Housing Benefit you should get in touch with us within ONE MONTH of the date of the notice, or we may not be able to consider any dispute.
The benefit cap
There is a limit on the total amount of benefit that most working age people can get. This is called the benefit cap.
Information for landlords
If we pay your tenant, they can give us written permission to talk to you about the progress of their claim and the award.
Temporary absence from home
Housing Benefit can still be paid in certain circumstances if you’re absent from your home on a temporary basis.
Report benefit fraud
We are committed to providing Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction for residents who are amongst the most vulnerable and needy within society.
